11:22 pm - I read inappropriate material.
I always have. ) A good story is a good story, and as long as the reader can handle it(or get help understanding if s/he has trouble), why should there be limits?

So when I came across this gem of a site while bouncing around the internet this evening, I read it, and I signed it, and thought I should share: http://www.notoagebanding.org/

Basically, it boils down to the fact that some publishers, prompted by The General Public(which we know is, taken as a whole, pretty stupid), are in favor of slapping a label on a book saying "this is appropriate for ages 7+," or 9+, or 11+, etc. Sounds ok at first, but I've dealt with so many people with so many different ideas as to what was or wasn't appropriate for their child at a certain age, or who refused to let a kid pick a certain book because it was too easy or too hard or "that's a little kid book, let's get you a nice big chapter book," etc...I can only see this causing more frustration for the kids, in the long run. If you read down the list of supporters thus far, there's a lot of authors, illustrators, library-types, teachers, readers, and parents who are against this sort of labeling, and willing to speak up about it. I don't do this often, but...read the statement, read the list, and if you've ever read a book "intended" for some other age group...please sign. And while you're at it...feel free to pass it on.

Well...it's official. I have The Plague. I think I probably caught it at Con, since I was feeling extra-tired(despite actually sleeping on a nightly basis), and kinda stuffy and out of it on Monday.

I'm not sure if it makes it better or worse that about 60% of my coworkers now have some variant of Plague, too. On the one hand, several of 'em were varying degrees of sniffly or out-sick when I got back, so it's not my doing. On the other...we've got an already-understaffed library, with at least half the staff sick. Several of us worked through it today, being in various degrees of "It's not that bad, I promise...don't send me home."

*holds up a dose-cup of Tussin in toast* Cheers!

You dislike conflict, and you've been able to rise above the angst of the world.
And when things don't go your way, you know they'll blow over quickly.

Easygoing, you tend to find joy from the simple things in life.
You roll with the punches, and as a result, your life is light and cheerful.

You find it easy to adapt to most situations, and you're an open person.
With you, what you see is what you get... and people love that!

06:33 pm - They say I'm crazy but I have a good time...
So...first post from the new 'puter...

Yeah, I was bad yesterday and went ahead and bought something I was going to wait on. On the plus side, between selling RedCap(under a new alias, and with everything freshly repaired/replaced/reinstalled) to the mommy-person, rebates, tax-free weekend, etc, I'm getting what I wanted by way of an upgrade/replacement for around $550, brand-new. She's a wide-screen Toshiba, with about double the hard-drive space, equal RAM(and can add more later if I want), burns dvds as well as cds, faster processor, and a lot sweeter temperament than RC. And prettier, too;-)

More Stuff )

Dunno if anyone's noticed yet, but I revamped the ol' LJ. It's mainly because on this screen, my owl-paper is rather cut off on one end, and doesn't look as spiffy. And I kinda like the soft grays and so on, at least for now...looks clean, and soothing. Opinions, suggestions, comments?

...I also changed out my bed coverings, and now have a pretty amber-colored chenille throw on here instead of the thick-and-heavy comforter.

Internet connection is bleh tonight, so if you see me popping on and off, that's why. I can't even get through a couple hours' worth of friends-posts without it blinking off on me, so...*crosses eyes*

As for other stuff, feel free to skip down to the end if you're not particularly interested in random bits of ramblingness intended mostly for the benefit of me anyways. In fact, I'm gonna go ahead and put it behind an lj-cut )

As far as Dragon*Con stuff goes...right now I've got affirmative confirmations from Zach and [info]lyrid, and several negative confirmations. Zach's pretty sure a decent-sized group of his friends are going, and I've asked him to get confirmations as well, since I can offer lodgings to 2-3 of 'em. If not, I may hafta see if anyone else out there in lj-land(or possibly on the DP forums) needs crashspace, and make arrangements that way. Otherwise, we're looking at up to $178/person after taxes, and that's just not good. It'd be cheaper to snag separate spots in other people's rooms at that price. So...anyone who thinks they'll be able to make it and needs a place to stay, or anything like that, please let me know by wednesday. Thanks:-)

RedCap is home from the 'puter-doctor today...yay! Apparently it was not, in fact, the fan. How do I know? Because "fan" was not on the list of parts they wound up replacing, though "system board," "a/c adaptor," "heat sink," and "keyboard" were. So yeah...puter's got issues. Will know a bit later whether the drivers are still an issue, as I plan to test this in a bit. And standby still doesn't work, apparently. So...we shall see.

In other news, I got a free-raise-with-promotion. Kinda. As far as the county's concerned, I'm promoted, though I'll be doing the exact same stuff as before. Our system director went to the county board or what-have-you and told them it'd be a good idea to bump us Circ. people from Clerk 1 status to Clerk 2, thereby raising our pay-scale to that of most of the rest of the clerical-types instead of dead last, and (she hopes) making it more likely that people will actually stay working in the libraries, instead of chasing after receptionist stuff that pays better. Anyways, money=good. Means I'll have less trouble with school financing, and maybe not hafta skimp so hard once I'm there. Which means less stress, which = better still.

Annnnnnnnd, just caught a flea on my arm. Hopefully that was the only one to hitch a ride up here, but since I'm wearing a dark-colored shirt and a mostly-black, floor-and-then-some-length skirt, it's possible there's more. Eehw.

Wellp, 's decided. Not doing the school thing at all till next fall, at which point I will be moving out, possibly paying rent(for which I shall get a part-time job in Charleston, but no more'n 20 hours/week), and doing the full-time student thing. I can save enough back without breaking anything, won't need a car once I get there anyways(CofC students get free bus-rides, apparently, and that goes all over the place), and even if it turns out I don't have a brother-person for a roomie, I can afford half an apartment, or to rent a room somewhere. And do school.

I may end up taking out a tiny loan via the teacher-program or something, possibly, but it won't be more'n $2000 over the course of two years, and shouldn't be too hard to pay back. I'm also gonna start setting aside moneys(starting after D*Con) from the spending-part of my paychecks, so's to replace RedCap next year before the move.

Part of me's excited, part's scared shitless, and part's still in shock over the fact that I can actually do this.

04:15 pm - Holy Shit
Ok, so to elaborate on the previous post, it turns out that I suck at math. Seriously. )

I'm going to sit down with daddy tomorrow afternoon and talk it over with him...particularly since I don't know if he knows about the them-paying-rent offer, and since he's the one with access to my other fundage. But I think I'm going to do this. Now I've just gotta decide whether I want to stick with the art history or go with history...art history seems to have more opportunities for museum-work, which would be even more ideal than library-stuff, for all I enjoy my job...but it involves studio classes*shudders* Very specific ones. And I think they may try to make me re-take drawing. Yick. On the other hand, I keep finding drool-inspiring summer internships for AH majors that aren't offered to plain ol' history majors. Hrm...

Regardless of what I decide to do school-wise, I'm not going to be taking classes for the next year, so I've decided to be constructive. Which means, among other things, getting my attic cleaned up and organized, the things that're being saved for moving out repacked properly, throwing things out or selling them if I don't want/need to keep 'em, and in general being a tidier more organized person. If I can do it at work with me and all my coworkers dropping things off on my desk and needing to keep track of things, I can do it with my room. I just have to knuckle down and do it. Besides which, I need to start packing and organizing things anyways, if I plan on moving out any time in the next few years.

Another thing I'm going to do is on the crafts/sewing/jewelry/whatever front. I'm going to keep a list of projects, and every week get at least one of them done. Some are smaller, some are bigger...some of it's just taking inventory of what I've got lying around, or organizing, some is mending or repairs...doesn't matter. Something will be done every week. )

Of course, any commissions or other paid work will take precedence over stuff that's just for me/just for fun/just to use up material. Money is good:-)

I'm exhausted, haven't eaten since lunch around 4, just got home about an hour ago after being gone since 7:20 this morning, my legs are going to rise up and rebel any time now...and I feel great. I don't understand why people bother drinking at live-music things, I really don't. I guess it's because I get more of a buzz from a single live song than alcohol's ever given me.

Writeup(caution: long) )

In other news, I found out the other night that the local SCA group meets for combat practice and the like on sunday afternoons at the exchange park/fairgrounds/fleamarket-place. Plans are being formed to look into this more. Possibly this sunday, even. We shall see. It sounds like another possible way to indulge in geekery and love-of-sharp-things whilst doing something good for me health-wise, too. This is a tempting combination, needless to say. What Your Soul Really Looks Like

You are a wanderer. You constantly long for a new adventure, challenge, or even a completely different life.

You are a grounded person, but you also leave room for imagination and dreams. You feet may be on the ground, but your head is in the clouds.

You believe that people see you as a bit small and insignificant. People pay more attention to you than you think.

Your near future is still unknown, and a little scary. You'll get through wild times - and you'll textually enjoy it.

For you, love is all about caring and comfort. You couldn't fall in love with someone you didn't trust.

Whether you're a nightowl, living in a commune, or taking a vow of silence - you like to experiment with your lifestyle.
Expressing your individuality is important to you, and you often lie awake in bed thinking about the world and your place in it.
You enjoy staying home, but that doesn't mean you're a hermit. You also appreciate quality time with family and close friends.

An outdoors person, you like animals and relate to them better than people.
You tend to have an explosive personality, but also a good sense of humor.
People sometimes see you as arrogant or a know it all.
You tend to be a bit of a loner, though you hate to be alone.

Souls you are most compatible with: Seeker Soul and Peacemaker Soul

12:37 pm - On gaming, angst, and lack thereof
So, as a couple of you know, I've been waxing nostalgic the past couple of days, and wandered back over to see what was going on with Kerro Weyr. Sadly, it's still quite dead, the most recent post dating back to '02...a lot of us graduated highschool then, and got on with our lives and just plain got too busy to play for a while there, so it died. And that's a pity, because it was a great game.

I thought maybe the recent fond memories and such had been because it was my first foray into the world of roleplaying(I got my first email account simply so I could play in an online weyr), and because time had passed, etc. It's not. Kerro was a great game, with great people, and we had a lot of fun doing it. There were serious storylines, and not-so-serious storylines(for example, anything involving the Weyrleader's incredibly tacky shorts), good writers, mediocre writers, a nice well-mixed variety of characters, in-play angst from time to time...but it always stayed in-play. And that, I think, is one of the main things that made Kerro truly remarkable, both in the gaming world and the 'net. It was an rpg of sorts, and a mailing list/online discussion group, and there was no OOP drama. None. I was re-reading back through the old logs and such, and nowhere out-of-play do you see petty arguments, backstabbing, he-said-she-saids, side-taking, or any of the other problems that usually turn up in games and mailing lists, forums, or organizations of any sort, online or off. On the rare occasions when one player did have a problem with something another had done, they handled it privately, and it was taken care of. Done. No dragging it into anyone else's life, no mudslinging, no flaming, no forcing people to choose sides. Most of the time nobody else was aware there were sides to choose. It was all about the game, and the stories, and making it better than it already was, one post at a time. And it worked. The game had been running for a number of years before I ever joined, and I played for 4-5 years before it died.

This is why I love gaming, why I stuck with it and tried over and over in other groups, other fandoms, over time. This is why I watch so many groups, visit so many forums. I've seen what the internet can be, what groups, games, forums, e-lists, community can be. And it's truly amazing. So, though I doubt they'll ever see this, and may not remember who I am, I'd like to thank the founders and BoD of Kerro Weyr, for the best 'net experience I've ever had, and for showing me what a game, what a group, can be.

Ok, so after the advising/counselling thing, the plan/outcome is as follows:
cut for those not interested--warning: LONG )

...So yeah...in case nobody could tell, I'm quite excited at present. I've been informed that the fact that I'm working to correct my mistakes(i.e. retaking stuff I failed) counts for a good deal more than the stuff I screwed up on, because I'm trying to fix it. Which makes me very happy. And my GPA's still not where it needs to be, but this summer and fall should fix that. Though I am rather worried 'bout needing to have my application in before my finals this fall...she said just stick a note on it that the transcripts're coming, and I should be fine.

Note to Self: Check with boss-lady tomorrow about possibly switching to tues/thurs as late days, so's to take the English class in the morning instead of being in class till 8:15 two nights a week.

Quick question for the Summerville-Charleston area folks:

How many are actually planning(as in, 75% or better chance that you will, in fact, be in attendance) on going to Shadowmoor next month?(June 9-12...or in my case, 6/9-6/11)

Things to remember:
  • Your first event is FREE!(does not include the cost of food(minimal) or gas(carpooling should help immensely))

  • Having a group to run with from the start, even if it's just one or two people, does make it easier and more fun...though that's not to say you can't have fun wandering into town by your lonesome.

  • It's FESTIVAL!(this means in addition to playing dressup in general, your character gets to really dress up nice...or whatever his/her version of "dressing up" would be) This also means lots of other fun stuff going on...though I'm not sure what it'll be this year.

  • It's loads of fun:-)

  • I'll be trying to put together a costuming-outing and character creation workshop/packet party between now and then, so if you can't think of something, no worries!
